Hiring Trends December 2022

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) have published their latest Jobs Outlook (November 2022), key findings include: 

  • Hiring intentions increased despite economic confidence dropping 

  • In August-October 2022, business confidence in the UK economy fell by a further 2% from the previous rolling quarter to net: -69, a new record low. At net: -68 in October, the barometer has been in negative territory for 12 months. However, employers in October (net: -68) were more optimistic than in September (net: -69) and August (net: -71). 

  • Employers’ intentions to hire permanent staff in the short-term rose by 1% to net: +18. This was the first increase in sentiment since January-March 2022. Regionally, sentiment was the highest in the North of England (net: +23), followed by the Midlands (net: +21).   

  • In the medium term (6 months+) hiring intentions for permanent staff rose by 1% to net: +19. Similar to the short-term outlook, this was the first increase since April-June 2022. Regionally, hiring intentions were notably higher in the Midlands (net: +23) compared to the North of England (net: +22) 



The Office for National Statistics (ONS) report on vacancies and jobs in the UK for December 2022 included: 


  • The number of job vacancies in September to November 2022 was 1,187,000, which is a decrease of 65,000 from June to August 2022. 

  • In manufacturing the rate of quarterly growth fell by 5.2% from June to August 




According to jobs search engine Adzuna the average salary nationwide for Maintenance Engineers is £39,114, an increase of 3.3% year-on-year. Locally average Maintenance Engineer salaries are £39,132 in the West Midlands, £38,729 in Staffordshire, £39,521 in Shropshire and £41,795 in Warwickshire. 

The average Service Engineer salary is £39,086 nationally, 2.9% year-on-year. This will vary depending on industry, for example the average CNC Service Engineer salary is £37,650 and £31,819 for forklift service engineers.
